How a Leading Healthcare Alliance Is
Implementing Integrated Talent Management

An impressive success story from the recent
Strategies 2010 Talent Management Symposium

Johnson City, TN – March 11, 2010   On March 4 at the Talent Management Strategies 2010 Symposium, a
leading healthcare provider shared a blueprint for success in implementing a fully integrated Talent Management system. Jamie Parsons, SPHR, FACHE, Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA), one of the country’s leading healthcare providers, demonstrated how MSHA is utilizing TEDS People Resource Planning (PRP)™ to deploy enterprise talent management and harness the power of his organization’s talent for optimal impact and dramatic results.

The title of Mr. Parsons’ presentation was Implementing Integrated Talent Management: Successes and Challenges. He summarized his organization’s overall task when he quoted Dennis Vonderfecht, MSHA’s President and CEO:

“All organizations are facing serious challenges every day, whether it is in the government, business, or not-for profit sectors, and the livelihood of our existence resides on how we approach these challenges. Mountain States knows that healthcare is no exception and we are facing some serious challenges as we move forward, especially in the area of personnel.”

MSHA began developing a roadmap to streamline and automate workforce development functions and align employee goals to corporate outcomes. They began with Learning Management and Competency Management as they also moved toward implementation of other critical elements of Integrated Talent Management.

TEDS was selected by MSHA, in part, because of the system’s underlying principle of People Resource Planning.

PRP is the optimization of development, performance and deployment of an organization’s human capitol to achieve the desired business outcome in the shortest amount of time and at the lowest cost.

“Before our partnership with TEDS, we had different systems for learning management, staffing and recruiting. Our competencies and performance evaluations were paper-based. As for succession management, we really didn’t have a set process. The largest issue was that there were no links or consistency between processes and records.”

MSHA, like other healthcare organizations, was challenged by mandatory requirements, fragmented systems, and low-tech solutions - many of which depended on manual processes.
They had to move quickly to a streamlined, accountable, interactive and business outcome-based system that would result in improved individual and organizational performance.

By implementing TEDS, MSHA had the framework for fully integrated, flexible and customizable talent management that fully utilized their own HR leadership expertise. They were able to establish a workable blueprint for competencies, development plans, behavioral standards, evaluations, and performance improvement and management.

“We are now able to get the right employees in the right positions in the shortest amount of time to help us achieve the best business outcomes and goals,” Mr. Parsons said. “Bottom line, once we saw there was a system based on the compression of time and increase of accuracy in closing business and individual gaps to achieve business results through fully integrated and deployed processes, we knew TEDS People Resource Planning was the system for us.”

Another major factor in MSHA’s rapid streamlining and automation of workforce development and performance functions was the full integration of human capital functions afforded by the TEDS system.

“A fully integrated Talent Management system captures the needed data once and then uses that data in many places,” says Joe Ellis, Founder and CEO of TEDS. “The data does not have to be entered multiple times and that results in major efficiencies. Having the data in a single database gives companies the ability to understand their organization at a strategic level.”

Parsons says that MSHA can also mine that data for an accurate picture of their organization by viewing the current talents and abilities of their team members across the enterprise in real time.
“This helps HR know if they need to train, outsource, or hire new team members to achieve a business initiative. And all team members’ data is at the fingertips of managers.”

Because the TEDS integrated system eliminated restrictive HR silos, HR is now able to perform its job quicker and easier without the headache of multiple systems. By replacing multiple systems with one, MSHA is realizing major cost savings.

In 2009, MSHA successfully implemented TEDS Learning on Demand™, TEDS RTC Power ™(Roles, Tasks & Competencies), Tuition Aid, and TEDS Succession management™. TEDS Job Vision™ (recruiting and staffing) in being implemented this month and TEDS Performance Impact™ is on-schedule for implementation in May.

Next year, MSHA plans to have TEDS installed on Apple’s iPad  to bring additional portability of Talent Management functions to the organization and its team members.
